Pediatric Physical Therapy Can Be Fun

Pediatric physical therapy knows kids don’t have the attention span or maturity of an adult. The therapists are good about making therapy as fun as possible. Swings, balls, toys and bikes are among the many tools used. Children will be so busy playing, they won’t even realize they are undergoing therapy.

Physical Therapy for Children Can Hurt

Healing is dynamic and, like any other workout, physical therapy can result in pain during as well as after sessions. For small children, parents should come prepared with a post-therapy distraction, whether it’s a favorite toy or a small snack.

In the early days, when children aren’t accustomed to therapy, there may be emotional meltdowns. Be gentle with your child and recognize that, even though pediatric physical therapy involves toys, it’s also a lot of work and a bit scary due to being unfamiliar.

Therapy Starts at Home

For optimal results, what parents do at home matters. If families don’t reinforce the techniques and exercises utilized during therapy sessions progress can be delayed or nonexistent. It is vital that parents do all exercises at home as suggested by their child’s therapist.

However, that can be easier said than done. Children may not like the exercises because they are difficult or painful. Younger children going through the infamous ‘no’ phase may oppose any direction simply on developmental principles. It can be quite difficult to elicit cooperation and attention from children, but with some creativity it can be done.

Five Tips for Getting Kids to Do Their Physical Therapy Exercises

Here’s a list of ideas to encourage kids to do their pediatric physical therapy exercises Offer a reward, although note we were cautioned to avoid food as that conditions children to treat themselves and can lead to food issues. Instead blow bubbles, read a book or engage in a favorite activity. Older children can work over several days to earn a movie, meal out or some other larger reward. Our toddler loved to play on as their reward for doing exercises. One thing to consider, depending on the child, is that the reward is something that can only be earned by doing their physical therapy exercises. Make it a game. We did a lot of simple things such as putting animal stickers on the stairs in an alternative pattern to encourage our toddler up the stairs. We played ‘save the animals’ moving stuffed animals from the bottom to the top of the stairs. We once ate ice cream while kneeling, an exercise that required our toddler to stay in one position for an extended period of time. Finding a way to make therapy fun is half the battle. Tell kids how many repetitions they will do of each exercise so they know the end is in sight. I often made the mistake of asking my toddler to do squats and they would not cooperate. Our physical therapist gave us the tip to set a number such as 5 for us to work toward. Amazingly this little trick worked fairly well. She knows when the squats end and that seems to motivate her. Cross train. Are there any sports or other physical activities that work the muscles or are similar to therapy exercises? If so, with the therapist’s approval, sign your child up and cheer them on. We are dealing with generalized weakness, so almost any physical activity is therapeutic. We have done dance, yoga, swimming, soccer and other sports. At home, we also invite our toddler to join us when we exercise. Ask someone your child likes to do exercises with them. Our toddler loved the older neighbor kids and they did a great job of leading her through all her exercises. This way we didn’t have to argue with her and her admiration for her friends made her much more cooperative.

Improvement doesn’t happen overnight, it is a slow, steady process that involves a lot of hard work on everyone’s part. Hopefully, these tips will make pediatric physical therapy a little less difficult for you and your child.
